Free Software Event supporting Open Document Standards Saturday March 26, 2011 @All Saints, High Street, Hereford HR4 9AA, 10am – 4pm

As a follow up to the  successful SFD event last September we are hosting another Open Source Event with space again donated by All Saints, Hereford, a fully accessible venue in the City Centre with a lovely cafe attached

It’s a Free Drop-In Event with Open Source Software & Linux demo’s for both new and advanced users, plus lots of information about Open Source Software and Systems, Presentations and  Guest Speakers.

Dr Mark Wright Bristol City Council’s cabinet member  responsible for ‘efficiency and value for money’ and an Open Source  advocate will be speaking at 2pm about his experience of Open Source in Local Government.

This time our focus is on Open Document Standards (ODS), and we will be showcasing open source Office Software which uses these  Open Standards. If you have ever been sent a document you could not open you will know how important standard formats are.

We are supporting Open Standards because we think we should all be able to

  • Choose any operating system or application and still be able to read and edit all our old documents.
  • Collaborate with others regardless of which software they are using.
  • Use any software of our choice to interact with our local and national government.

Open Source Office Software such as Open & Libre Office provide high quality alternatives to proprietary office software  they are also compatible with  many legacy formats – a real plus if you  have older documents in formats which are no longer supported. They are free to use which is great for everyone from business users to students and home users as they are legal and can used on as many PC’s or laptops as you wish without the need to pay license fees.

These Office Suites are just one example of the FOSS (Free Open Source Software) available and we have copies to give away on our HLUG Open Disc which includes a wide selection of Open Source Software you can run under MS Windows. We will also be demonstrating Linux Operating systems and giving advice on how to install and set them up – and you can take away a Free Linux Disc.

Our Open Source Events are run by the friendly HLUG volunteer team who have a range of experience in Business, Education, Specialist IT & General use – the event is open to everyone so why not Drop-in and say Hello
